Water Heaters

8 Signs Your Water Heaters Need Repair

Water heaters work around the clock throughout the year to ensure you always have warm showers. It is no surprise that it will likely break down due to the amount of stress it has to go through daily. It may only strike you that there is a problem when the only thing you get from your water heater is cold water.

That is when you'll know how important it is to have a working water heater. Most homeowners don't notice problems with their water heaters until the problem becomes worse. You can avoid that by being aware of the signs that show you when your water heater needs repair. Here are the signs you should look for when your water heater needs repair.

1. Water temperature fluctuation

Have you noticed a fluctuation in temperature in your tankless water heater lately? Well, that is one of the signs that something is not right. If the water temperature keeps changing even after making changes to it, then it is an indication that there is a problem. Changing water temperature occurs due to mineral deposits around your water heating components.

2. Reduced pressure

If your tankless water heater experiences reduced pressure, it shows that something is wrong. Mineral deposits are the main culprits of lower water pressure in your heater. When mineral deposits accumulate in your heating components, it leads to blocked pipes. It in turn reduces the water pressure from your heater. Reduced pressure can also be due to poor design.

3. Leakage

It seems obvious, but may not unless you inspect your water heater. Leaking water can be dangerous for children, other electrical appliances, and pets. The leakage can cause corrosion which leads to it eating into the outer parts of the water heater. Most homeowners, however, don't inspect their water heater until it's out. Doing a quick scan every month will help you identify the leaks on time.

4. Odd sounds

A little noise from your water heater may not be a reason to worry. But when that noise becomes more frequent, it is a sign that your water heater needs repair. The odd sounds occur due to the mineral deposit build-up near the heating components.

When the dirt particles form a layer at the bottom of your tank, it becomes hard for your heater to do its job. The noise you hear is due to the mineral deposits jostling around. Too much noise will make your water heater become weak and start leaking.

5. Rusty water

The only thing you should see when you open your water tap is colorless water. So, what if the water is discolored? If your hot and cold water taps have rusty water, then your water pipes are the problem.

However, if the metallic water is in the hot water tap only, then it's time to inspect your water heater. The heater has a metal pole made of aluminum and magnesium that causes rusty water once it gets damaged.

6. Lukewarm water

You can have lukewarm water in your heater if you have changed the settings or if the weather outside is cold. However, if none of those are happening but you still have lukewarm water, then it's high time you had a water heater repair.

7. You run out of hot water quickly

The water heaters have been made to keep your water hot and ready for use whenever you need it. There are two elements, one at the top and one at the bottom. If you run out of water too fast, then your water heating elements are not working properly. Quickly running out of water is a sign of a serious problem and you need water heater repair.

8. It's been more than a year

You have to regularly maintain your water heater to have it running smoothly. So if the last time you inspected your water heater was over a year ago, it's time to have it checked again. It's always better to detect a problem early and have it repaired on time. It may also be time for your water heater replacement.
